Ms. Babbitt's Philosophy of Education

I see myself as a life long learner and as someone who seeks to inspire the same in others. Knowing yourself and developing the ability to learn continually opens doors that are both personally and professionally satisfying and rewarding. I want my students to develop a healthy interest in learning, to connect their learning with their lives, and to understand the impact of learning on their lives. Education transforms lives.

My instructional practice encompasses reading, writing, and communication. My focus is to help students learn the skills of a proficient reader and writer, to proficiently engage in critical and analytical thinking, to learn the dynamics of small and large group discussion, to become a competent if not confident public speaker, and to embark on a journey of self-discovery through personal connections to literature. I present opportunities for students to engage in self-selected learning activities based on their interests, multiple intelligences, and abilities. Striking a balance between prescribed learning activities and self-selection provides differentiation that both educates students and helps cultivate a love of learning by pursuing their individual interests.

As a teacher, I create a safe, nurturing learning environment that encourages and promotes learning. Students engage in meaningful learning experiences each day that advances their understanding of English language arts and the world around them. I maintain a positive, accepting, inclusive classroom environment that promotes learning, diversity, tolerance, and acceptance.

As a teacher, I challenge students to reach higher, focus deeper, and to achieve lasting results. I work with the students individually to support them in their learning and to help them achieve results based on their individual needs.

Teaching is an opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of students both today and into the future. I am continually inspired by the opportunity to teach students and to open up a world of possibilities to them. I set a positive example for students, model positive adult behaviors, and demonstrate good decision-making. I encourage students to pursue that which means the most to them in life. Teaching educates and transforms lives, and I’m fortunate to be part of such a wonderful profession. I work well with others and continually strive to improve the world around me. Teaching is my life’s calling, and there’s nothing else I would rather do with my life. Making a positive impact on student learning is my daily walk.

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Curriculum
I provide a culturally-aware curriculum that includes differentiation, integrated language arts lessons, technology, and a focus on the specific skills of proficient reading and writing in reading and writing workshop format. The curriculum is designed to meet the state standards for reading, writing, and communication. Unit response activities include technology projects such as digital storytelling, writer's notebooks, reading strategies, art, and projects such as scrapbook poetry portfolios.

Instruction

>> Response to Non-Print Lesson Materials

>> Reading: Practicing Prediction

Assessment
I provide for a variety of assessments (diagnostic, formative, and summative) including journaling, writer's notebooks, group discussion, reading strategies, literature circles, projects, technology, reading and writing assessments, and objective assessment. I find innovative and interesting ways to implement sound assessment practices.

Test Drive Exam View Software
This is my method for objective assessment. I post the link to the test on the class web page. The students complete a study guide and then the test online. Students are provided test results instantly, and each student's name with results with a total score and indicator for each test question are emailed to me promptly for the grade book. I maintain the results email for each test and enter the score into the grade book. This software allows me to write test questions or use publisher prepared test questions over the literature.
